Bonks, bruises and surgery!!

My poor little boy has a black eye (almost). He was trying to climb over my legs while I was cutting Cameryn's long fingernails and toenails and smashed his face into a hard toy on the floor. It's not too noticeable yet but I had to document it anyways.

I also wanted to write that he will be having his eye surgery on September 13th. He had an appointment with his eye doctor last week and she said that he was ready for surgery (finally). His measurements (how far his eyes cross, etc.) are the same from his last appointment but his eyes are crossing more and more. She wants to do it soon so he'll have the best possible chance of developing a normal depth perception and so that he won't develop other vision issues.

I'm not too nervous about it yet but I'm sure I'll get worse as it gets closer. Right now I'm just grateful that I finally have a date set. I feel bad for my little man though. I hate to see him hurting and I just pray that he won't be too bad after the surgery. The doctor said that most parents say that their child was fine the same day of surgery so I'm praying for the best. I also hate that I can't feed him before the surgery. Hopefully they won't make him go too long without food cause my boy loves to eat (anything).

He'll be put under general anaesthesia and the surgery will only take about an hour so it's a quick procedure. I'm not really scared about him going under even though his Doctor said that's the part that worries most parents. I think it's because I've been under anaesthesia so I'm not really scared of it. Though I was a lot older then Luke.

Just keep my baby in your prayers please.

Daisy,
Thanks so much for visiting my blog and taking the time to read my adoption story. I love sharing it. Of course, I don't mind strangers commenting on my blog... thats part of the fun of blogging.

I grew up in Maryland. My dad worked for NSA. We lived in Anne Arundle County.

I had crossed eyes myself as a baby. I had 3 surgeries to correct it. The first one I was about 10 months and the last I was about 18 months old.

I always failed the school issued eye tests. Every year I saw the eye doctor but I wasn't prescribed glasses until I was 21 years old. I cannot focus well when one of my eyes is closed but if they're both open I can focus. Its weird.

But it gets weirder...When I was 25 my eye doctor did a test. He put a pair of glasses on me that had one red lens and one green lens. He stood in front of me, a few feet away and holding a light. He would move toward the right wall and ask me what I saw, "3 Red Circles." Then he'd move to the left wall and ask me what I saw, "2 Green Circles." Then he stood directly in front of me and asked the question again. This time my answer was, "3 red circles...umm, 2 green circles....well, it depends on which eye I use." He asked, "so you are rotating your eyes?" I replied, "umm, yeah..." He said, "Ah, I thought so...you only see out of one eye at a time. Most people see both red and green at the same time."

I only see out of one eye at a time and I didn't even know it until I was 25 years old. I can switch back and forth between which eye I use but I only use one at a time. The doctor said that my eyes could be corrected with surgery but after so many years, my brain probably wouldn't handle it and there is a big possibility I'd see in doubles. So, I pass on that surgery... I can see in doubles anytime at will, I just have to decide to use both eyes at the same time.

At one eye doctor appointment they handed me a piece of paper with several pictures of animals on it. They asked me to identify the animals that are jumping out of the page. None of them looked like they were jumping out. I totally failed. So apparently my depth perception is bad. I think its weird because I can tell that the fork on the table is closer to me than the cup, etc. So I don't know how my depth perception relates to others...apparently it stinks but I get by.

I know I sound like a freak now. I hope I haven't scared you about your boy's future. The surgeries have improved over the last 3 decades. And, while my eye issues may sound bad, I have lived a pretty normal life. I mean I have a drivers license, I had good jobs, I made friends, and got asked out on dates, etc.

I am sorry to write such a long comment. I usually don't have this much to say!

I am sure Luke's surgery will go great. He'll be fine! We live in a time and country where doctors work miracles!

Daisy,
My wife (Terry) went on 4ever! What she forgot to tell you is that our eye doctor told us that surgeries have gotten better since we were kids and that not only could he correct Terry's eyes if she wanted, but that what happened to her wasn't really common anymore compared to then.

Please don't go and have a heart attack because Terry picks which eye to see out of.

Poor baby Luke! I feel so bad when babies get hurt like that. I know that you will be nervous about his surgery....but there are so many talented doctors, I'm sure that he will be in good hands

Surgeries are a breeze these days and I'm positive he'll be fine and better for it. If you get nervous that day while your waiting, you can call me and we'll talk the time away.

Sorry about the bonks... I hate it when they get hurt too, especially if it was my finger nail that accidently gashes him, ugh.

I agree the surgery/recovery will be smoother and better than you think! We'll be praying too!
